Dragonglass Obsidian

The first study of round obsidian from Milos island, Greece, 2023-25

This is the first study on the obsidian nodule from Milos, Greece. All previous scientific work has focused exclusively on the archaeology and volcanism on the island of Milos. After three years of research, collecting, and field expeditions, we were able to compile, for the first time, a study focusing on the round and structured obsidian from Milos, which we have dubbed “Dragonglass obsidian” in the course of our work. In 2024, we began introducing Dragonglass obsidian to a global collector community that primarily deals with natural glasses, such as tektites and volcanic glass. This is intended to help ensure the preservation of this unique and rare obsidian from Europe. The aim of this study is to establish and expand the understanding of Dragonglass obsidian, thus laying the foundation for a better knowledge and comprehension of the formation of phreatic obsidians as a rare and unique natural phenomenon. Examples show how different, aesthetically fascinating obsidian can be. Obsidian is more than just a stone. It is a mirror into our past, reflecting the testimony of human history and creativity. And it is evidence of the powerful forces of nature that shape and change our world. Obsidian has long been our indispensable survival companion, and has helped us evolve. Now we can admire it.
