Dragonglass Obsidian donated to Museo dell’Ossidiana di Pau, Sardinia
We visited the amazing Museo dell’Ossidiana di Pau in Sardinia, and donated the Dragonglass obsidian to their collection. It is the largest museum in Europe dedicated to obsidian,
both globally and locally. Most of the exhibited specimens come from the immediate vicinity of Monte Arci.
both globally and locally. Most of the exhibited specimens come from the immediate vicinity of Monte Arci.
The museum draws almost entirely from the nearby Monte Arci volcanic system, and is the main European museum dedicated to obsidian. This region is one of the most significant prehistoric obsidian sources in the Mediterranean.
Obsidian has influenced the local culture to this day, often being found incorporated into façades or used in sculptures. Obsidian from Monte Arci in Sardinia. It was mined as early as the 4th millennium BC to produce arrowheads, blades and scrapers, which were traded throughout the Mediterranean region as far as Egypt. Although half the mountain is covered in obsidian, this 'black gold' is now strictly protected and cannot be collected. It is primarily found in the cork forests and on the hills of Monte Arci, as well as in the valleys, where it has been transported long distances and exhibits a deep texture. Sardinian obsidian is typically black and transparent, though it can also be mahogany-coloured, appearing in the form of needles and nodules embedded in perlite.

Dragonglass Obsidian Added to Athens Museum Collection
We’re very happy to share that Dragonglass Obsidian is now part of the collection of the Museum of Mineralogy and Petrology in Athens, thanks to a donation we made on 15th December, 2025.
The museum is the first geological museum in the world to include Dragonglass Obsidian in its collection. We selected several specimens based on their shape, texture, and color (40-200 g). Many thanks to Panagiotis Voudouris.
